Beginner & Training Questions

Do I need prior martial arts experience to join?

No prior experience is necessary. Our classes are open to adults of all fitness levels and backgrounds. Beginners are integrated gradually, learning foundational footwork, safety, and falling techniques (ukemi) at their own pace.

What is the minimum age to practice at Source Dojo?

Our programs focus primarily on adult training (18+). Responsible teenagers may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

What should I wear for my first class?

For your trial or first few classes, comfortable athletic clothing (such as sweatpants and a T-shirt) that covers your knees and elbows is ideal. Once you commit to practice, you will purchase a traditional white martial arts uniform (keikogi).

Do I need to buy my own sword for Iaido?

No. Beginners start training with wooden practice swords (bokken) or wooden sword substitutes provided by the dojo. As you advance, your instructor will guide you on purchasing an unsharpened practice sword (iaito).

Are Aikido and Iaido safe?

Yes. Safety is the top priority at Source Dojo. Training begins with basic body awareness, balance, and learning how to fall safely. All practices are conducted in a controlled, respectful environment under expert guidance.

Philosophy & Benefits

What is the difference between Aikido and Iaido?

Can I practice both Aikido and Iaido together?

Yes. Many students train in both disciplines. Practicing Iaido develops posture, focus, and distance awareness (ma-ai), which directly enhances Aikido movement, while Aikido provides dynamic partner awareness and body mechanics.

Is Source Dojo competitive or tournament-focused?

No. Neither Aikido nor Iaido at Source Dojo involves competitive sparring or tournaments. Training is cooperative and self-focused, emphasizing personal growth, physical conditioning, mindfulness, and martial technique.
