Etiquette at the dojo

The practice of Japanese martial arts is based on core values, including respect and appreciation. It is thus important to make room for these two values to manifest and ensure their perpetuity.

When you arrive at the dojo (training room), be sure to bow upon arrival and departure, tilting the head and upper body forward (~30 °) towards Kamiza (altar in the center dojo).

When you enter / leave the tatami mats (training area), sit in seiza (Japanese position kneeling) and perform the bow in the direction of Kamiza, placing the 2 palms of your hands in front of your knees on the tatami , the two indexes touching to form a triangle, and tilt your body forward avoiding your nose and forehead from touching the tatami.

Make sure you are always on time or early for the class / course. Demonstrate the required attendance.

Align yourself in seiza facing the Kamiza until the arrival of the sensei (instructor).

If you arrive late for a class, be sure to stay on the edge of the tatami mats until the instructor allows you to join the class.

Be sure to warn and get permission from the instructor if you have to leave the tatami mats during a class before the end of the class.

Never communicate by shouting or out loud, always be as discreet as possible. Use gestures whenever possible.

Make sure your practice is honest and transparent of racism or discrimination against other partners.

Maintain an exemplary body hygiene. This includes always having a clean gi (work outfit), cutting/keeping the nails short to avoid accidents, removing jewels during the practice time... etc.

Always be attentive and watch for your safety and that of others.

When the instructor demonstrates a technique, or especially speaks to you sharing more details about a given technique, make sure to sit in the seiza position, and do not forget to thank him/her at the end of the explanation, performing a usual bow.

Contribute and make it your duty to keep the dojo clean and welcoming!
